When Root Canal Treatment Is Recommended

Pulpitis (inflammation inside the tooth)

A deep infection in the pulp often causes sharp, throbbing pain or lingering sensitivity. At this stage, the tooth cannot recover on its own and the infection continues to progress

Symptoms of pulpitis

  • Persistent toothache
  • Sensitivity to hot and cold that lingers
  • Pain that worsens at night
  • Discomfort when chewing
Periodontitis (infection around the root)

Bacteria can spread beyond the tooth and affect the surrounding bone and tissues. This may lead to swelling, pressure, or abscess formation, and can result in tooth loss if left untreated

Symptoms of periodontitis

  • Swelling near the gum
  • Pain when biting
  • Pus or small bump on the gum
  • Bad taste or odor
Deep decay reaching the nerve

When a cavity extends through enamel and dentin, bacteria reach the inner tissue. Even if the tooth looks intact, the inside may already be infected

Symptoms of deep decay

  • Visible cavity or dark area
  • Sensitivity that becomes stronger over time
  • Food getting stuck in the same spot
  • Occasional sharp pain
Cracks, chips, or structural damage

A damaged tooth creates a direct path for bacteria to enter. Even without visible decay, the pulp may become inflamed or infected

Symptoms of structural damage

  • Pain when chewing or releasing pressure
  • Sudden sensitivity
  • Hairline cracks or visible damage
  • Intermittent discomfort

Modern Approach to Root Canal Treatment

Conservative (Early-Stage) Treatment
  • Evaluation of the pulp condition We assess how much of the inner tissue remains healthy and whether it can still be preserved
  • Targeted medication inside the tooth We place medicated materials to reduce inflammation and protect the remaining pulp
  • Preservation of healthy tissue We keep as much of the natural pulp as possible so the tooth can maintain its vitality
  • Protection of the inner chamber We seal the treated area to prevent bacteria from re-entering the tooth
  • Restoration of the tooth structure We rebuild the outer portion of the tooth so it remains stable and functional
Comprehensive Root Canal Treatment
  • Precise access to the inner tooth A controlled opening allows precise entry into the affected area
  • Removal of infected tissue Damaged or non-viable tissue is cleared to eliminate the source of infection
  • Cleaning and disinfection The internal canals are carefully cleaned to remove bacteria and debris
  • Sealing of the canals The space is filled and sealed to protect against future infection
  • Final restoration of the tooth The outer structure is rebuilt to restore strength, function, and comfort

What It Felt Like to Be Here

I have been going to A to Z Dental since the day they opened. I've had everything done from cleanings and fillings to root canals and dental implants and I have always had an excellent experience. The high quality work and materials they use, along with the caring and professional staff are the reasons I recommend A to Z Dental to all my friends. They also charge below average prices, so everyone can afford the dental treatment we all need. The only down side is getting an appointment. Good news travels fast.

Barry M.

This is the best dental office I’ve ever visited. Had 2 cavity fillings and a deep clean - painless during and after procedure. The dentist was amazing - cool personality and professional work. Also, he genuinely cares about his patients - he could’ve gone straight for a root canal, but he insisted it’s better not to resort to that unless absolutely necessary.
